President's Plan to Develop Trinco with India: Boosting Agriculture and Employment

President Ranil Wickremesinghe emphasized the need to address agricultural sector challenges and prioritize farmers' concerns in the nation's rebuilding efforts. He announced plans for an extensive agricultural modernization initiative aimed at fostering a competitive industry for crop exportation.

During a paddy harvesting event in Galamatiyawa village, President Wickremesinghe highlighted the significance of agriculture in the region. He promptly addressed the concerns raised by residents, including the need for a canal and an electric fence to safeguard farmlands.

The President disclosed plans for a feasibility study to construct a canal and install street lights. He outlined initiatives to grant freehold deeds to farming families, allocate land to young agricultural entrepreneurs, and secure grazing land for dairy farmers.

President Wickremesinghe also revealed a special program in collaboration with India to develop Trincomalee, including plans to establish a fuel supply via pipeline. Efforts are underway to create an investment zone and elevate the Trincomalee port as a major port in the east.

The President emphasized the importance of enhancing the agriculture industry through efficient practices and restoring the country's past glory of exporting crops. The largest agricultural modernization program will be launched soon, with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and technical assistance from India.

Under the 'Urumaya' program, freehold land deeds will be granted to licensees, and efforts are underway to resolve land-related disputes. The event witnessed the presence of distinguished figures and officials, along with representatives of farmers' organizations and residents from the area.

This comprehensive plan aims to boost agriculture, employment, and overall development in the Trincomalee district, with initiatives expected to commence by 2025.
