The University Grants Commission (UGC) has officially announced the opening of applications for universities starting today, September 14. Senior Professor Sampath Amaratunga, Chairman of the UGC, stated that interested candidates can now submit their applications through the online system. To access the application portal, candidates should visit the official website of the UGC at WWW.UGC.AC.LK. The deadline for submitting applications has been set for October 05.

This announcement comes after the release of the results for the General Certificate of Education Higher Examination held in 2022. Out of the 263,933 candidates who appeared for the examination, a total of 166,938 candidates have qualified to apply for university admissions.

In related news, the Ministry of Higher Education and the police have jointly launched a new initiative aimed at addressing the issue of harassment and mistreatment faced by new students in universities and higher education institutions across the country. As part of this project, a dedicated WhatsApp phone number has been introduced to facilitate the reporting of incidents of torture or harassment of freshers.
