Famous Veteran Singer Sanath Nandasiri passed away


Veteran singer and musician Professor Sangeeth Nipun Sanath Nandasiri passed away at the age of 81.

One of the most famous Sri Lankan singers, Nandasiri is a composer and singer who has won many awards for his compositions spanning more than 60 years.

He also served as Chancellor of the University of Visual and Performing Arts in Sri Lanka.

Nandasiri started working in the media industry from the age of 13 in 1955. He was also a playback singer for more than 30 popular Sinhala films, including Ahas Gauva, Duleeka, Sihina Lowak, Bempara Madhu and Senasuma.

In 1974, he started his first solo concert 'Swarna Kundala' and since then he has performed more than 250 concerts. In 1979, he recorded his first full album with the same title as his concert. These include his popular songs "Kisiwak Nokiana" and "Ekodaha Kande".

After that he recorded three major albums in Singlanka in 1980 and 1981. Also, he has sung songs for films with music direction by Premasiri Kemadasa.

In 2016, following the demise of late veteran musician Pandit Amaradeva, he was appointed as the Chancellor of the University of Visual and Performing Arts.

In the year 2018, a function was held at Western Province Aesthetics University Recreation Hall in honor of Professor Sangeeth Nipun Sanath Nandasiri with a music program titled 'Ninnada 2018 Thunbad Ratha Swara Tehana'.

During the event, the then President Maithripala Sirisena presented Nandasiri with a special honorary award.

In 2019, 100 songs of Nandasiri's songs and a collection of songs titled "Rasanandaya" were published by the Sri Lanka Foundation.

In 2019, he was honored with the "Janaphimani" honorary award at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall.

Professor Sangeeth Nipun Sanath Nandasiri was 81 years old when he passed away. Funeral arrangements will be announced later, the family said.
