Approval to bring nuclear power to Sri Lanka

The cabinet has decided to consider nuclear energy as an alternative to meet future energy demands.

Minister Bandula Gunawardena, who participated in the press conference announcing the Cabinet decisions held today (28), said that in accordance with the decision, a steering committee and 9 working committees have been appointed to investigate the use of nuclear energy to produce electricity.

The minister also mentioned that Sri Lanka has the capacity to carry out a nuclear power generation program as per the recommendations given by the International Atomic Energy Agency regarding the self-assessment report prepared by those groups.

Accordingly, Minister Bandula Gunawardena said that it is appropriate to take further steps in the Vienna Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage and the Convention on Additional Compensation for Nuclear Damage.

The Cabinet approved a joint motion by the Minister of External Affairs and the Minister of Power and Energy to participate in the conference.
