Sri Lanka plunges into darkness for 10 hours on New Year
Sri Lanka Electricity Board Engineers Association President Nihal Weeraratne said today that after the country's coal reserves are exhausted on the 31st of this month, the three power plants of Nuraicholai 'Lakwijaya' power plant will be shut down, and after that, there will be a 10-hour power cut in the country.

Nuraicholai Thermal Power Station provides 45% of the country's electricity supply. If all three machines fail here, there will be a power cut for more than 10 hours.

On the other hand, he said that since the water level in the hydropower plants has decreased by 75%, it is uncertain whether the hydropower will reach its maximum capacity in the next few months, and this may cause the country to be unable to function.
