In a recent audit report released by the National Audit Office on September 18, shocking revelations of widespread corruption have come to light. The report highlights a staggering 107 alleged frauds in Samurdhi Banks and 2,000 associated societies, resulting in a loss exceeding Rs. 23 crore.

The audit report, submitted for examination on April 21 this year, discloses that between January 03, 2014, and the end of July 2015, 15 fraud cases involved a sum of more than fifteen million rupees. Furthermore, from 2019 to February 2020, 92 fraud cases accounted for over seventeen million rupees.

Despite expectations of a decline in intentional wrongdoing and financial fraud, the audit report paints a grim picture, indicating that such fraudulent activities have not diminished.

These alarming findings were brought to light through the audit report included in the Department of Ocean Development's annual report for the year 2022.
