Sri Lanka's Water Minister announces steps to address housing problem of hilly people and increase water tariff for sustainability


Water Supply and Plantation Infrastructure Development Minister Jeevan Thondaman has announced measures to address the housing problem of the hilly people in Sri Lanka by providing land rights. He stated that a committee has been appointed to identify and address the needs of the people of Prudhoe and to submit proposals on how to carry out the upland development work. Additionally, the Minister mentioned that various special events have been organized in November to mark the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the highlanders to Sri Lanka, and the main event will be held in Colombo.

The Minister also spoke about the cabinet's approval of an increase in water tariff with the aim of ensuring the sustainability of the country's water supply and to ensure continuous supply of clean drinking water to all. He acknowledged the hardships faced by the people and is committed to introducing a new water tariff formula and policy based on the agreement with development partners and reviewing the water tariff in the coming months.

The announcement was made by Jeevan Thondaman during a media conference held at the Presidential Media Center on July 18. He emphasized that the decision to increase the water tariff was taken after careful consideration and detailed discussion to find solutions to the challenges faced by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board and to maintain the quality of water supply.
