New electricity tariff formula: For first 30 units Rs. 3,000

According to the new electricity price formula, the charge for the first 30 units will be increased from eight to fifty rupees, and accordingly, for the first 30 units, each customer will be paid a fixed charge of 1,500 rupees along with 3,000 rupees, said Ananda Palita, coordinator of the Joint Task Force on Oil Ports yesterday (18).


He said that the Electricity Tariff Amendment Bill is going to be submitted to the Cabinet today and accused it of being a black market.


Convenor of the Joint Working Group on Oil Ports, Ananda Palitha added;

“The Electricity Tariff Amendment Bill is going to be submitted to the Cabinet today (18). Rs 8 charged for the first unit is now Rs 50. 1,500 fixed charges. That means a user of 30 units will have to pay three thousand rupees. Increased electricity bill, increased power unit. Likewise, the electricity bill has been tripled. This is price gouging beyond the black market. The price hike is aimed at selling the power plants to foreign private companies…”
